Scary Snow Days

The sled slipped along the packed-down trail like a quiet whisper.

It didn’t bump over rocks like the pie wagon always did. It didn’t fall into any ruts.

For once, Ellie did not have to hang on to the sides to keep the load steady.

“Yippee!” She kicked snow and played with Nugget all the way to town.

Nugget kept Will away from Jem and Ellie’s pie deliveries. That mean rich boy never picked on them anymore.

Will did not even answer when Jem rang the bell at the Sterlings’ big brick house.

The maid opened the door.

Will’s little sister Maybelle peeked around the maid. “Hi, Ellie.”

“Hi, Maybelle.”

Will glared at Jem through the window. He made an ugly face.

“Pie peddlers!” he mouthed.
